Helpful Definitions

Before we get too much into the ‘why’ we practice this way, we need to define some terms. that you may have heard of.

Some of these terms are used interchangeably by providers so it helps to have a base on what each mean.

 

Nutrigenomics:

Applied biochemistry, focusing on how food constituents impact gene expression

 

Nutritional Genomics:

evaluates the structure and function of food constituents on gene expression and the inner-relationship between diet and health

Functional Genomics:

focuses on and identifies the function of as many genes involved in transcription, translation, regulation and gene expression, as well as protein to protein interactions

Biochemistry:

The science of chemical processes occurring within a living organism

Genetics:

Studies the DNA sequence within the structure of the genome

 

SNP:

Single Nucleotide Polymorphism without jumping too much into the science, this is what’s contributing to low, high or an absent enzyme, contributing to altered function. These enzymes are proteins and are very important when it comes to many various functions. This is what gene tests are evaluating. These different variants are what make us so unique and different. SNP can occur all over the body.
